Vertical Jump Testing: Why It Matters for Athlete Evaluation, and What It Should Cost

The vertical jump is one of the most telling numbers in athletic testing. Here's why coaches and scouts rely on it, how to measure it well, and how prices compare.

Why the vertical jump matters

A vertical jump is a simple test of lower-body explosive power: how much force an athlete can produce, and how fast. That's the same quality that drives the first steps of a sprint, a cut on the field, a rebound or a block. It's why the vertical jump is a standard test at football and basketball combines and in school and college testing programs.

• Talent evaluation. A quick, repeatable way to compare athletes' explosiveness across a roster, a class or a recruiting pool.
• Training feedback. Tested regularly, the jump shows whether a strength and power program is actually making athletes more explosive.
• Readiness. A jump that drops well below an athlete's normal can be an early sign of fatigue, so many coaches check it before hard sessions.
• Return to play. Comparing an athlete's current jump to their own baseline gives coaches one more objective data point after time off.

How the jump gets measured

• Reach-and-vane testers measure how high an athlete can touch. They depend on standing reach and arm swing, and need the vanes reset every jump.
• Contact mats time how long the athlete is off the mat and calculate height from flight time.
• Beam-based testers do the same thing without a mat: a beam near the floor detects when the feet leave and when they land.

Getting a jump number you can trust

1. Use the same protocol every time. Same warm-up, same number of attempts, same arm-swing rule.
2. Land the way you took off. With flight-time testing, tucking the legs or landing bent-kneed stretches the flight time and inflates the number. Coach athletes to land with legs extended.
3. Record every attempt, not just the best, so you can see consistency as well as peak.
4. Test on a hard surface. A soft surface depresses on takeoff and affects the measurement. Use the same surface, at a similar time of day, when you're tracking progress.
5. Take off and land right on the beam. Athletes should set up and land on the balls of their feet, directly on the beam. Taking off or landing outside the beam won't give accurate results, because the foot may come to rest on the beam later, after landing.
